India Launches Campaign for UN Security Council Seat
India has formally intensified its diplomatic campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028–29 term. During high-level diplomatic engagements at the United Nations, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted India's expanding role in peacekeeping operations, climate negotiations, global development initiatives, and representation of the Global South.
The campaign comes amid increasing discussions over reforming multilateral institutions. India continues to argue that the existing Security Council structure no longer reflects present geopolitical realities. New Delhi also reiterated its long-standing demand for permanent membership alongside broader institutional reforms.
The move is viewed as part of India's broader foreign policy strategy aimed at strengthening its international influence while projecting itself as a responsible global power.
